What is the biggest
misconception about the industry?
A common industry
misconception is that our construction teams are resistant to change. Change is
inevitable and our 40 years of business is evidence that we are stronger when
we adapt - especially as it relates to technology. HESS continues to embrace a
green culture, providing tablets for field teams, flat-screen TVs in trailers
and encouraging all team members to operate as paperless as possible. Digital advances
have offered significant procedural efficiencies, real-time communication and
productivity increases that even the most change-adverse person embraces as a
result of the undeniable value-added benefits. Our goal is to offer a better
tomorrow to the youth of today and HESS is proud that current technological
trends are aligned with the goals of our internal sustainability culture.
What keeps you up at night?
While every contractor
experiences inherent safety risks, HESS takes every precaution to avoid risking
injury on our projects. We work tirelessly to implement a stringent safety plan
on all jobsites. It is not without the support and guidance of our field
supervision and foremen whom uphold these policies that we are successful. We
consider each day that our teams return home safely, without injury, incurred
violations or lost-time incidences, a personal success to all of our team
members and their families.
What project is your
company most proud of?
As we reflect on the past
40 years, we express our deepest gratitude to our owners, designers,
subcontractors and consultants whom have taken part in our success. Over 75% of
our work is performed with repeat clients and is due in large part to the
consistent high-quality and craftsmanship they have come to expect from our
family-owned and operated firm. This would not be possible without the
investment of our valued team members, whom are truly our differentiator -
continually upholding our HESS values, delivery quality projects on-time and
within budget.
How does your ABC
membership help your company?
Our active involvement in
the ABC community has led to direct connections that may not have been made
otherwise. We have built many subcontracting and vendor relationships as a
result of conversations that began during a networking event or a need that was
discussed at a committee meeting.
What do you look forward to
each day?
The opportunity for
self-improvement. I aim to end each day growing as a person and finding ways to
be a better leader.
What is your favorite movie
or tv show?
It’s a tossup between The
Wire and Breaking Bad.
What do you do for fun?
Golf!
What book are you currently
reading?
On a recent flight, I
thoroughly enjoyed a quick read called “Winning with Accountability” by Henry
J. Evans.
What was your first job?
When I was 15, I worked as
a laborer during the summer/holiday breaks.
